On Thursday 5th August AUO Montgomery and Si McGregor took a group of cadets to the dress rehearsal of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo (REMT). After arriving in Edinburgh at about 5.00pm we managed to find a parking space close to the castle and made our way to the designated meeting place for all Cadet Force personnel.
When we arrived we met army, air and sea cadets from places such as Yorkshire and Newcastle as well as local cadets. After we were admitted we found our seats which were on the South stand right in the middle of the arena which gave us a great view of the show. The show started with the massed pipes and drums which was a great sight, they were followed by the Polish Border Guard Band which played music and used large wooden horns not unlike a vuvuzela.
Next was the Imps motorcycle display team which is made up of youths from 12 years old to 16 years old who gave an amazing display of motorcycling skills. We were also entertained by the South Carolina Citidel band, the band of the Gurkas, New Zealand Highland Dancers and The Army Fitness Corp, who like the ACF were also celebrating their 150th anniversary. One of the highlights of the show was the Jordanian Army Band who also had horses which were on display while the band played. The New Zealand Army Band played music which had our cadets dancing in their seats as well as most of the audience. Finally a tribute to our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq when a patrol from the Coldstream Guards came into the arena along with two of the Afghan population to show the work our troops are doing to help the Afgan citizens. The Band of the Coldstream and Grenadier Guards played while the patrol was carried out.
All in all it was a fantastic show and one which all who attended from 2 Highlanders were glad they did not miss.

The officers of 2 Highlanders and Shetland Battery would like to extend their thanks to the staff of the Strensall Station Officers Mess for the fantastic dinner served. Thanks are also due to Cadet Piper Ewen Brindle and Pipe Major George Neish who provided the pipe music. The delight was evident on Col Chapman’s face while every drop of Gordon Highlanders blood was seething through the CEO’s veins as Caberfeidh and The March of the Cameron Men played out. Col Chapman was also surprised to be presented with a copy of a tune entitled Col Chapman MBE specially composed for him by Cadet Piper Brindle and heard in public for the first time at the dinner night.2 Star Exercise

The 2 star fieldcraft exercise led by Major Blair of the Shetland Battery started at 2.00am with the cadets roused to make ready for a 3 kilometre trek to a position where they then prepared to advance to contact. They then prepared to engage the imaginary enemy and win the firefight. The aim of the exercise was to get the cadets used to travelling with their equipment and weapons. To add a touch of “scottishness” the final part of the exercise was led by piper Ewen BrindleLord Lieutenant Cadets
