Cadet Leadership Courses are to be held at CTC Frimley Park between 8-28 Jul 12:

a. Course No 12/01: 8 – 14 Jul 12

b. Course No 12/02: 15 – 21 Jul 12

c. Course No 12/03: 22 – 28 Jul 12

Aim. The aim of the course is to develop the cadets’ initiative and self-reliance by exercising them in problems of practical leadership.

Course content. The course is focussed on the application of practical skills during the day and at night and is physically demanding. Cadets should be confident in administering themselves in the field overnight. The syllabus is not specifically orientated towards the training of any particular Service, although the emphasis is on leadership skills and will involve the following activities:

Practical skills. There will be revision and instruction in the following skills:

(1) Section and Platoon Battle Drills

(2) Map and Compass (cadets are expected to be competent in this area)

(3) Skill at Arms (L98 A2 Cadet GP Rifle)

(4) Patrolling and Ambush Drills

(5) Fieldcraft and administration in the field

Inter-section Sports. The inter-section sports events will include:

(1) Volleyball

(2) Tug-of-war

(3) Boat race

(4) Obstacle course

(5) Air rifle shoot

March and Shoot competition. This will test cadets’ stamina and leadership during a 4 km march (with webbing). In previous years the standard of shooting has varied considerably and is poor in many cases; all cadets should be revised in the Marksmanship Principles before attending CLC.

Tactical navigation / orienteering. Cadets will conduct orienteering and cross-country tactical navigation exercises throughout the week.

Command tasks. Cadets will lead their sections during a command task. Those cadets who have previously practised logical problem solving, and who are confident delegating and controlling a group, tend to perform much better in these tasks.

Fieldcraft. Cadets will take part in a 3 day/ 2 night field craft exercise and must be competent at administering themselves in the field (basha construction, eating, washing, cleaning weapons etc). They will get limited sleep during this exercise. Cadets should also be familiar with Section and Platoon Battle Drills and with basic Patrolling skills (including ambushes). It should be noted that whilst there is some time spent revising skills and drills there is no time to teach subjects from a standing start. Cadets with injuries or illnesses which could be aggravated by arduous physical exertion should not be nominated.

Watermanship. Cadets will participate in water-based activities. Therefore nominated cadets should be confident around water. Weak or non-swimmers will be clearly identified and closely supervised during these activities.

Fitness. The course is physically demanding. In previous years the fitness of some cadets has been a cause for concern and chronically unfit cadets have been sent home. Cadets will participate in cross-country movement on foot with equipment, orienteering, obstacle courses, log races, a march and shoot competition and various other strenuous activities. Therefore, it is emphasised that cadets must be fit and free from injury. Cadets not deemed to be sufficiently fit to complete the course by the Course Nurse/Medic will not be allowed to continue. County and contingent HQs confirm, by applying via WESTMINSTER, that their nominated cadets have completed both parental consent and the requisite fitness to attend forms (see paragraph 10 for further details). Cadets should be able, as a minimum, to achieve the following basic fitness standards prior to attendance:

Males: 30 press-ups followed by a run of 1.5 miles in under 11.5 minutes.

Females: 15 press-ups followed by a run of 1.5 miles in under 14 minutes.

6. Debilitating illnesses or injury. Any cadet who suffers from or has a history of asthma, epilepsy or diabetes, or who has an injury that might be aggravated during the course, will be interviewed (and possibly examined) by the Course Nurse on arrival, and may be judged unfit to attend.

7. Medical background. Comdt CTC reserves the right, after consultation with the Course Nurse/Medic, tosend home any cadet who arrives with an undeclared medical condition that may preclude them from completing the course safely. Cadetssent to CTC with notable medical conditions or with recent or current injuries will be rejected on arrival; this will both waste the cadet’s time and also leave no time for a replacement to be found.

8. Weapon Handling Tests (WHT). All cadets must have passed the WHT on the L98 A2 Cadet GP Rifle within the previous 6 months (which must cover them up to and including the last day of the course). Cadets should also have passed the WHT on the L86 A2 LSW, where possible; this is not a mandatory requirement. WHTs must be conducted after 28 Jan 12 to be guaranteed to be valid for the duration of CLC. A WHT certificate will be included in the Joining Instructions for successful applicants’ counties or contingents to complete and return to HQ CTC.

9. The cost is £35 per cadet. This includes food, accommodation, a photograph and a Cadet Leadership Certificate and Badge. Non-refundable if you fail to arrive or are returned to unit.

Following an overnight snowfall, cadets must only make the journey to Gordon Barracks if judged safe to do so by a parent/ guardian.

The following changes will be necessary to the days training:

Due to some cadets from outlying detachments being unable to travel, it would be unfair to carry out the planned interdetachment competition. This aspect of the day is postponed.

The following planned activities will be adapted: Observation and Camouflage and Concealment will be combined. Drill and Turnout will not go ahead. Command Task will not go ahead outdoors, but will be an inside “thought exercise”

Cadets will be arranged into smaller groups to undertake the following: Camouflage and Concealment/ Observation, First Aid Scenario, Military Knowledge Quiz, Shoot, Map and Compass, Command Task

Cadets that will not be showing up should contact webmaster@2highlandersacf.org.uk or another member of their detachment to let us know.

Adult Instructors that do not feel it is safe to travel from their home location must inform the Company Commander as soon as possible.

Please monitor the website throughout the day in case of other changes, such as an early end to the day.

UPDATE 09 DEC 2011 1215

The training day will go ahead, with the following conditions:

Cadets travelling from outside the city must only travel if parents feel it is safe to do so, including for picking cadets up at the end of the day.

Cadets that will not be showing up should contact webmaster@2highlandersacf.org.uk or another member of their detachment to let us know.

Adult Instructors that do not feel it is safe to travel from their home location must inform the Company Commander as soon as possible

All personnel must bring suitable warm clothing and a packed lunch.

If a significantly low number of cadets show up, the training day will be called short, probably ending at lunchtime.

In the event of heavy snowfall or other significant decrease in weather conditions overnight, the training day may still be cancelled.
